Treacherous driving in Panama, be careful

So when we first moved to Panama, we knew we needed a vehicle right away, as renting can get quite expensive. Despite what many people warned in regards to purchasing a USA Brand, I having never owned an import as in a vehicle not from North America, we purchased a Jeep. The reason many people recommend not buying a USA Brand is that parts are very difficult to come by and people that are familiar with working on them as well. Regardless we purchased a Jeep and it treated us well.

After driving in Panama for nearly 6 months I apparently got a bit to comfortable and neglected to be overly cautious. As anyone that has ever been in a vehicle in Panama will soon realize that the roads are a bit sketchy, for one the signage is in Spanish, two many deep potholes exist through out the Country of Panama and three people are very aggressive and can be dangerous drivers. Tiffany and I have grown up within an hour of the 2nd Largest City in the USA, Los Angeles, which has nearly 4 million people. However despite the size and quantity of people in LA, the roads are quite safe and functional, yes you may often have and extra hour added to your commute in or around LA but for the most part people observe the paint on the ground and the rules of the road. This being said we were certainly shocked at the driving in Panama, as many people simply disregarded speed limits, paint on the ground indicating lanes and even driving in the shoulder/emergency lane for miles and miles.

Hopefully that paints the pictures, so as mentioned we were in Panama nearly 6 months accident free. I was making one of the treacherous returnos/U-Turns and a speeding car nailed me in our nice Jeep, this then pushed me into a taxi cab. Boom 3 car accident, what a shame, everyone involved was safe other than being very shaken up.  Now in Panama you are supposed to remain in the same spot where the accident occurred, which I was aware of but being shaken up and growing up around get out of the road strategy of the USA, I moved to the side of the road, Oops. So after waiting for the Policia to arrive and contacting my insurance company. I followed protocol which is a breathalyzer to be sure no one was drinking as this seems to be an issue even at 11 am.

Coronado, Panama…..Not To Be Confused With San Diego

Back in the 1940s, Coronado was just a few sleepy ranches alongside an unspoiled stretch of blue Pacific and black-and-white speckled beaches. However, Coronado is now a highly popular beach town on the Pacific coast of Panama.

Located an hour from Panama City, it is on the ‘Arco Seco’ (‘dry arch’) stretch of coastline, so named because of the remarkably low rainfall it receives each year.

So What’s Up with WhatsApp?

Before moving to Panama I had never heard of the popular app WhatsApp. We did our homework and learned that almost everyone with a smart phone here uses it! So I figured I would share a little about it, and what has made it become so wildly popular that they now claim over 600 million users worldwide!

WhatsApp Worldwide

Here’s a short list of reasons that contributed to its increasing usage since 2009 and facts about WhatsApp

  • All you need to sign up is your phone number
  • WhatsApp tapped into your contact list to display friends already using the app.
  • All you need for WhatsApp is an internet connection or WiFi
  • Free for a year and $0.99 a year for unlimited messages
  • MMS was rarely used due to its cost, WhatsApp made it affordable with its photo sharing feature
  • Cross platform compatibility (still includes Symbian!!) saw users in emerging marketing jump on the bandwagon

WhatsApp got a lot things right in the beginning and its growth rate is reportedly faster than Facebook’s. With Mark Zuckerberg even saying “WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people.”

On February 20th, 2014 Facebook purchased WhatsApp for $19 Billion yes that’s a “B” billion dollars!

The thing is that it’s just insane the amount of money being tabled for a messaging app. And can Facebook recoup their investment in WhatsApp? The social media giant announced they will keep it independent, and with no advertisements scheduled to appear. Yet, the question of the day is: Where’s the money going to come from?

Coronado Bible Church, Playa Coronado, Panamá

Right in the heart of Playa Coronado, Panamá is a great Church we found shortly after arriving in Central America. That is right I am writing a blog involving religion, don’t worry we will likely refrain on blogs about our opinion on Politics, as we know that is another quite touchy area. Ha Ha. I try to live a light life that is not too serious, which sometimes backfires, anyhow back to the topic at hand.

Coronado Bible Church is located in the Coronado Mall aka Super 99 (noventa nueve) shopping center on the 3rd floor (piso 2 in Panamá) directly above the Flamingo Casino. After some searching online we were able to find details on Church options in the Coronado area, as with anything in Panamá finding details or a website for business is tough.

We have been regulars for a few months now at Coronado Bible Church and have made some great new friends in the community. Coronado Bible Church is a Non-Denominational English speaking Church which we are really enjoying being part of.
